Planet Bluegrass's pure bluegrass festival (Telluride is eclectic roots) draws a top-notch artist lineup and fanatical audience to the Planet Bluegrass ranch on the banks of the St. Vrain River for an idyllic weekend each July. The emphasis is on the progressive end of the bluegrass spectrum. Also, the bookers have a keen ear for picking out the best of upcoming acoustic bands, as well as paying tribute to newgrass all-stars like Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas and others. If possible, schedule an extra couple of days to enjoy wonderful recreational activities in the region.

Yonder Mountain String Band When RockyGrass announced its lineup of musicians for 2009 they left one spot to be announced for a "surprise special guest," setting off speculation that it might be Steve Martin, the ex-Saturday Night Live comedian and banjo player extraordinaire who has played with a few of the artist on the festival bill.

That turned out not to be the case, but the alternative was just as welcome. They were introduced to the crowd as a band that was local and would play cheap because the promoter had run out of money by the time he could fill the slot. It was also 10 years since their first appearance at the festival. Yes...Yonder Mountain String Band.

California

California is bluegrass country. Put together the renowned trio of ace fiddler Byron Berline, brilliant guitarist Dan Creary, and banjo master John Hickman with a fine bass player/vocalist, Steve Spurgin and acclaimed mandolin artist John Moore, and you've got something that crosses state lines.

This creative band, which officially broke up 13 years ago, plays all too infrequent reunion shows. It's a shame because drawing all these elements into a cohesive unit is like a rare jewel — you hold on to it because it's wonderfully precious. Needless to say, we were extremely excited to get a chance to see these guys in action despite the intermittent rain.
