Billing itself as the world's largest music festival, Milwaukee's summer celebration runs across 11 days and 11 stages, including more than 700 performers of every genre and a liberal dose of big-name acts. Gate admission ($15 a day) gives access to all stages except Marcus Amphitheater holds the headliner each night. Since Milwaukee is a fairly affordable city, Summerfest is among the best festival values of the year.

The producer of one of the most prominent city music festivals, Milwaukee's Summerfest, has put skin on the bones of its previously announced plan to launch an alternative rock festival for June 4-5 on the Summerfest grounds.

Milwaukee World Festival Inc. announced that festival now has a name, Verge Music Festival, a preliminary website, and an initial lineup headed by indie favorite Weezer.

The move gives fans from around the Lake Michigan area an alternative (or a complement) to Chicago's massive Lollapalooza and helps to fill a gap left by the demise of Rothbury across the lake. It also gives Milwaukee World a brand extension for Summerfest, which it claims is the "world's largest music festival and which opens three weeks later on June 24.

The festival will feature three stages of music along with action sports, shopping and other attractions.

Besides Weezer, the initial lineup includes notable acts Three Days Grace, AFI, She & HIm, Rogue Wave, The Raveonettes, Cold War Kids, Eagles of Death Metal and Crash Kings.

It's not quite spring, but Summerfest 2010's lineup is starting to bloom.

The music festival Tuesday morning released a partial roster of side-stage headliners for this year's fest, which runs June 24 to July 4 at Maier Festival Park. A big caveat: The list doesn't include performance times or specific stage locations.

Milwaukee World Festival Inc., the producer of Milwaukee's gigantic annual Summerfest, will debut a new modern and alternative rock festival June 4-5 on the familiar festival grounds at the city's lakefront Henry Maier Festival Park. The festival's name and logo image will be determined in a contest. You may submit your design here for a chance to win a deluxe trip for two to the festival plus other prizes.

Just last month, the company reached agreement with the city of Milwaukee to extend its Summerfest lease until 2030. Under terms of that deal, the company was expected to proceed with site improvements to support Summerfest but nothing was reported about plans for additional festivals on the site.

The new festival will run two weeks before the opening of Summerfest 2010 on June 24. The contest website says "the new festival will feature Alternative and Modern Rock bands and will include a nonstop lineup of national and regional headliners."
