Region: Golden West
Type: Camping Festival

Everything is mega about Southern California's festival of the year—three days and nights of the biggest names in alternative rock, huge crowds, beautiful grassy grounds, gigantic art installations, and the ultimate VIP experience. Having moved up a week last year, it is early enough in the season to beat the daytime desert heat (be prepared for chilly nights). The wild camping scene is part of the experience, but ample condo options for groups wanting to party privately. Sleep when you get home.

Even though it is not a done deal, there have already been a lot of obituaries written for All Points West since the NY Times reported last week that the "outlook is in doubt" for a 2010 festival. We'll hold off on any pronouncements, but it is not to early to assess the possible factors producer Goldenvoice/AEG may be weighing before making a final decision.

The one that has been most bandied about (in the Times and elsewhere)—the difficulty of securing headline acts—seems least credible to me. Yes, if they were starting from scratch it would be difficult to book A-list performers at this late date. But AEG is the second largest concert promoter in the country and it produces Coachella, arguably the most important alternative rock festival in the business, among other events. Surely it has the juice to bring in major acts.

Thom Yorke's supergroup has got an official name. "It has been decided that we call ourselves Atoms for Peace. hope you like the name.. it seemed bleedin' obvious," so the Radiohead's frontman announced.

Along with that, Thom revealed the new band's tour dates with Flying Lotus serving as an opening act. They will start the gig at Roseland Ballroom in New York on April 5 for a two-day concert. One day after rocking Santa Barbara Bowl in California on date 17, they will close the tour with a performance at the 11th Annual Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.
