Strawberry Music Festivals published its stage schedule for the Fall festival running August 30-September 2. Despite the unexplained absense of two previously announced performers, the lineup looks chock full of likely musical highlights.
Closers fof the festival's four nights are long-time fan favorite Sam Bush (Sunday), folk songstress Patty Griffin in her third Strawberry appearance (Saturday), soulful New Orleans troubador Marc Broussard in a festival debut (Friday) and the legendery Ramblin' Jack Elliot in his first appearance since 1985 (Thursday).
Among the category of big treats in store, other festival first-timers are Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile, which is making a big impression with its jazzy instrumental song suite; The Steel Drivers, the hottest new band on the bluegrass circuit; The Avett Brothers, who layer youthful punk energy on a bluegrass foundation; The Knitters, the roots rock favorites from the 80s playing a rare reunion date; Mavis Staples, the gospel great; and the Old 97s, one of the best of the alt-country bands.
Noted female bluegrass bassist Missy Raines with also be notable performing with her brand-new outfit, Missy Raines & The New Hip. Hayes Carll has impressed many critics with his Texas singer-songwriter style that evokes comparisons to Townes Van Zandt and other greats.
Throw in the usual crop of new discoveries and top local talent, and you have one terrific Strawberry Fall on tap. And now that the festival's site contract problem has been squared away, festival-goers will be able to enjoy a fine Labor Day weekend without worrying if they will be back in future years.
